About

Who I Am

I'm Nick Bland, a baseball operations and player development professional from Virginia Beach, VA. Most recently I served as a Player Development Analytics Fellow with the Miami Marlins at their Dominican Republic Academy, building the daily analytics workflows behind advance scouting and player development for both of the organization's DSL clubs. I work where the analytics department meets the field staff, and I do it in both English and Spanish.

My Analytics Toolkit

I work daily in R (tidyverse, ggplot2, Shiny, R Markdown, baseballr), Python, and SQL, and I've operated most of the tracking systems in the modern game: TrackMan, Hawk-Eye, Edgertronic, Theia markerless motion capture, KinaTrax, and BATS Video. With the Marlins I built SQL pipelines that put advance scouting reports in coaches' hands every morning, designed pitch-usage sheets and catcher pitch-calling cards used directly for game prep, and shipped a Slack scorebot via GitHub Actions that automated live DSL scores and standings. On my own time I build tools like an R Shiny pitcher outing report app with Stuff+ grades, heat maps, and movement plots. That app and two of my Marlins DSL analyses are written up on the Work page.

What I'm Looking For

A full-time role in Baseball Operations, Player Development, or Research & Development where I can keep turning data into development plans players actually use. I'm at my best translating models and tracking data into pitch design sessions, advance reports, and player conversations, in English or Spanish, and I'm ready to relocate anywhere baseball is played.
